Hydrating and soothing Chia lemonade..

As the warmer months arrive with vigour and the need for more hydration increases, this chia lemonade is a great option to include in your summer drinks menu. The chia seeds act as a demulcent when added to water, which means they absorb water and become super hydrating and soothing to the body.

*Demulcents are a class of plants, herbs and seeds that are deeply soothing, moisturising and cooling to the body. This action stems from the plant’s polysaccharide-rich fibre content that when added to water turns into a thick viscous solution 1. Therefore making the water super hydrating.

Demulcents also act as nourishment to the microbiome as prebiotic fibre, for good bacteria to feed off.

Some other demulcent herbs and plants include, psyllium husk, slippery elm bark, aloe vera, marshmallow root, Irish moss and manuka honey 1.

Chia seeds are also an excellent source of fibre, protein and omega-3 fatty acids. They are little power houses of nutrition 1.

So this recipe is not only delicious but also actually really good for you in more ways than one.

Here’s the recipe

Enjoy!
